The minister last night said that Pickett and Grant had known each other from West Point and I believe he said the Mexican War. His point was no matter what would happen the next day, when the scouts reported the reason for the fires the Confederates had going, Grant said they should celebrate out of respect and in honor of the occasion too. As we lit candles in the luminaries for those who had no one last night, it made the point all that more powerful.
Strange as some things go, I happened to be looking at the Battle Flag on my side of the marker when he began that story.
