The "lowly Corporal" as you refer was one of the soldiers stationed at Battery Marshall. He amoungst a host of others there were frequently detailed to assist with "other duties as assigned" if you will. This was not uncommon. He was one of two soldiers that morning that got into the Hunley to help crank it around a bit while Dixon and a few other crew members made some mechanical adjustments. As he had done so previously as well. This was also the Hunley's base. Most there were well aware of most all about it, so to those present it wasnt "classified". Nor was the discussion viewed as such about the blue light. It was a an intended signal, nothing secret or covert about it. Battery Marshall was also known to use same/similuar blue lights for the Hunley to get its visual bearing in the darkeness so it could better guide back to the Battery since the onboard compass didnt work too well. Because a modern military viewpoint would generally suggest that a Corporal would not have been present or included today to normally witness such a conversation, doesnt erase the fact that he did in 1864. Because the after action report given from Battery Marshall didnt specificly state what the "signal" was, doesnt completely discount nor erase all the collateral information and accounts given that suggest it was indeed via a blue light. Plenty there to support it.

This is a discussion not a debate. There is no trophy. If you chose to discount and ignore what evidence that does exist as it is in its own period context and understanding of same, for your own modern opinion or since the OR's didnt mention it so therefore it never happened, thats fine.. I have access to lots of original period documentation that lots of it hasnt been published nor found via google....

Pam...
You previously asked how long the Hunley could stay down, had to do some digging back through my files... It was calculated that it could remain submerged for about three hours. The longest time they actually tried it safely on a previous occasion was 2.5 hours.
