The POW's were denied fruit and vegetables at Camp Douglas from the outset even though there was plenty on hand. That willful denial of essential nutrition caused and aggravated much illness, including a great many cases of scurvy. I would imagine other Union POW camps dealt the same harsh treatment as a matter of Federal policy. This fact along distinguishes them from the Confederate camps, which lacked resources like fresh food and an abundance of blankets and clothing.
