Hi Joe,
You need to add “Confederate” to your question. I don’t have a finial number, still searching. Since many churches are used by both the North & South as hospitals I separated field and hospital chaplains.
A research paper “The Work and Impact of Chaplain During the American Civil War”,
the Civil War Chaplains Museum, in Virginia
Presbyterian Heritage Center “Religion & Chaplains during the Civil War”,
General Order 15 and 16 May 4, 1861 U. S. War Department, regarding Christian Chaplains. 14 known Negro Chaplains : fold3
Confederate States of America, War Department, September (19?) 1862, proclamation regarding Chaplains, Confederate Congress bill 102, April 27, 1861. Fold 3 & Presbyterian Heritage Center.
A Primary Source by R. G. Williams, Jr., interview with the grandson of the chaplain.
