For a detailed history of the U-boats in the Gulf of Mexico, read WWII in the Gulf of Mexico, by C. J. Christ, 2005. it's a big paperback, 297 pages with good maps and extremely well researched.

Strangely enough, just like in this thread, there is nothing about the Civil War in the book.
