General Anthony Wayne’s “Legion of the United States” had four sub-legions, each comprising two battalion of infantry, one of rifles, and one each of cavalry and artillery. The colors of the 3rd, (or rifle) battalion is the oldest surviving standard of the U.S. Regular Army.
