Francis Scott Key's Confederate Grandchildren

On September 13th 1861, Francis Key Howard, the grandson of Francis Scott Key, was arrested for being an “active secessionist” and imprisoned at Fort McHenry. 47 years earlier his grandfather wrote the Star Spangled Banner while a prisoner on a British warship bombarding Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

I believe the entire family were secessionist & many of them served in the Confederate Armed Forces.

McHenry Howard (Francis Key Howard's younger brother) told a funny story in his memoirs about the Federal recruiters attempting to recruit at the Howard house & being rebuffed by Mrs. Howard (Daughter of Francis Scott Key). This is humorous to me because Howard was already in the military, but serving the Confederacy! McHenry Howard had seen action from 1st Manasas with the 1st MD infantry CSA, and would continue to serve the Southern cause as a staff officer until being captured (for the second time) at Sayler's Creek in April 1865. The war over, McHenry Howard returned home to Baltimore in May 1865.
He was greatly puzzled to find this letter awaiting him:

“To Mr. McHenry Howard,
You are hereby notified that you have been this day enrolled by us in the Militia Forces of the United States, in the State of Maryland, under the Act of Congress of July, 1862, in the Third Enrollment District of Baltimore County corresponding to the 3rd Election District of said County, and will hold yourself in readiness for any such Military duty as under the Laws and Constitution of the United States may be required of you.”

The story of how Howard received the above letter was soon after relayed to him by his mother. For Howard it would became a great source of amusement...
Apparently everyone except these two recruiters knew of the Howard families allegiance to the Southern Cause. They arrived at the Howard home and insisted on speaking to Mrs. Howard after being told that all the men were away.
” Madam,we are the enrolling officers and we have come to get the names of the male members of your family – Have you a husband or sons capable of bearing arms? Mrs. Howard said ” Yes a husband and six sons.” “Your husband, what is his name and where is he?” “Charles Howard (Charles Howard was the son of John Eager Howard, a hero at the Battle of the Cowpens in the Revolutionary War), he is a prisoner at Fort Warren ” “And your eldest son?” “Frank Key Howard, he is also in prison with his father.” “And your next son?” “ John Eager Howard, he is a Captain in the Confederate Army.” “And the next?” “Charles Howard, he is a Major in the Confederate Army.” “And the next?” James Howard, he is a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Confederate Army.” “And the next?” “Edward Lloyd Howard, he is a surgeon in the Confederate Army.” During this time the men were becoming flustered and finally said “And your youngest son?” “McHenry Howard, he is also in the Southern Army and with Stonewall Jackson and I expect he will be here soon” [?IMG]This was during Maryland Campaign 1862.
I guess all that the recruiters cared to hear by that point in the conversation was '...I expect he will be here soon.' Lol, Mrs Howard then shut the door in their faces so they slipped the recruiting notice under it... McHenry would receive the note from his mother (unopened) 3 yrs later.
