Re: Talk Like a Pirate Day...again

Hurrah !!!!!

Now you are talking. Walker's Texan's were so poorly equiped that they actually were eager to be in battle to be able to gather better equipment from their enemy. They had not been engaged in Battle prior to Millenkin's Bend and had mainly been used as Garrison troops. They had been armed with the castoffs of the armies in the east mainly with shotguns and smoothbore muskets of the War of 1812 and the Mexican war. For this reason alone I very much doubt that they went into battle with a "Black Flag" at all, let alone with Death Head and bones on it as Mr. Dana described.

General Napoleon Jackson Tecumseh Dana was not noted for his unbiased objectivity of the observation contained in his reports.

In one noted case of the Texans in the actions preceeding the main battle at Millenkin's Bend a strongly fortified union position on a mound garrisoned by a Black Regiment surrendered without much of an engagement at all. The Texans did little more than make a display of force. Certainly not the actions you would expect of troops who were expecting to be wiped out under a "Black Flag" if they surrendered.

As for Fort Pillow even the United States Congress in an investigation of that infamous incident did not find reason to charge Gen. Forrest with any crime. But it makes great political headlines. And it would seem that was the case in most all of the simular reported incident where Black troops were reportedly "murdered" by Confederate soldier during the war. In every case where Black troops were engaged with Confederate troops Black troops were taken prisoners and sent to P.O.W. Camps, despite the orders that such troops were to be again sold as slaves.
