The first time blacks were enlisted (as conscripts) in the Confederate army was in 1864. They were not organized as troops in the field but detailed to the various military departments for labor. Prior to 1864 many blacks had been impressed by the army for labor but those raised in 1864 were actually conscripted into the army.
