That sounds like risky business. Case in point: Avery Harris of the 143rd Pennsylvania writes that John D. Williams of the 4th Maryland Infantry was shot for bounty jumping nine times. It seems that when Williams took the last bounty, he was assigned and compelled to go to his own (original?) regiment where he was recognized immediately. The entire division was assembled to witness the execution.
