This is the first story I ever heard of a foreign citizen being impressed into the Confederate Army. More than likely, he volunteered and changed his mind when he had the opportunity following the Battle of Gettysburg. He was captured (or deserted) and galvanized into the Union Army rather than face his fate as a POW. Glad he was not my ancestor.
