Edward P. Doherty led the cavalry detachment that tracked down John Wilkes Booth. He started the war serving with a New York militia regiment; having resided in Canada prior to the war, he was well connected enough to have some of his letters published in a Canadian newspaper. These letters document the first weeks of the war prior to his participation in the battle of Bull Run, where he was captured. To the best of my knowledge these letters have never been republished since they first appeared in the newspaper, so I hope that this short eBook will be received with some interest...
