While doing research about Camp Chase I ran across a series of letters that were censored by Union authorities because the author of the letter had written between the lines a hidden message in salt water. This occurred in 1862 but prior letters may have made their way home. Apparently the receiver of the letters could hold heat over the hidden message and it would appear. Some of these early letters may have made their way home in 1861 or the first couple of months of 1862. By April of 1862 Union authorities at Camp Chase were on to this trick.
