Hello Joe, From looking at the previous threads I see that I failed to answer one of your concerns about why the galvanized Yankees were not detected at Fort Delaware. The soldiers wishing to take the oath were housed in a separate holding area at Fort Delaware thus preventing them from being associated with the regular prison population thus a Union deserter may have felt more comfortable in these surroundings. Many of the 3rd Maryland Union soldiers were just as disliked by fellow Confederates as they were by Union troops. A few of the Confederates joining the 3rd Maryland did so just to get out of prison in my opinion and there were many fights within the ranks of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry. I've found numerous accounts of knife fighting etc.
Interesting story concerning you wife's ancestors.
