Brass buttons during this period had a high meaning. Their use on a coat distinguish the wearer as a member of an official government arm or unit. Brass buttons were even an item to be smuggled into the Confederacy, along with munitions. When Conferate soldiers were placed into POW camps one of the first actions of the camp guards were to remove all brass buttons from the prisoner's uniforms.
