Re: Confederate Iron Roller buckle belt

Civil War roller buckles came in many different sizes. They were sized by the inside measurement, so a 1 1/2" roller buckle would take a 1 1/2" wide belt. The heavier the load on a belt the wider the belt thus the wider the buckle, so a cavalryman's belt might be 1 3/4" wide where an infantryman's belt may be 1 1/2" wide. Some confederate waist belts used two smaller roller buckles rather than a larger buckle the right size. In short they used what was available. There's a 2nd Arkansas Cavalry belt with an iron roller buckle in storage at the Old Arkansas State House Museum, the buckle is 1 3/4" the belt is 1 5/8", here lies the question did the leather belt start out at 1 3/4" and shrink the 1/8" over the 150 years plus or was the belt made under size. Leather can stretch or shrink depending on age, quality and moisture content, but most period leather pieces will have shrunk and harden slightly because of the lack of proper care. I'm working on a pair of original dragoon pommel holsters to make them ready for display. it is a chore to get them more pliable and not darken the leather. Preserve and save the original patina is the first and last order. next time submit like questions to The Arms and Equipment Message Board.
