Gentlemen,

From reading your posts, I believe there is some confusion between "Ammunition Boxes" and "Cartridge Boxes." The Ammunition boxes, made of wood, were constructed and accountable items upon issue and the ordnance officer had to return them once the rounds were removed for use. The ordnance regulations outlines their dimensions, accountability, etc. Cartridge boxes varied widely and wildly. You may want to dig int the brigade ordnance officer's records and the records of the field officers and company commanders of the regiments you're interested in. It may give you some hints.

You may want to take this conversation over to the Arms & Equipment Board and the subject matter experts will likely have the information on both items readily available.
