In Alabama, as in all Southern States there was a poll tax. In Alabama when you registered to vote you had to take a test, as did the black registrants. As I recall, the tests were different and a white could have someone with him to help. My Dad went with me and "we" passed the test at age 18 and won the right to vote. My next stop was the draft board and I lost that one. Everything about the test to vote was slanted to keep blacks from voting. Poll tax was mandatory, paid annually and was $1.50
