Yes. He was either elected or appointed sergeant when his company was formed in May 1862. He remained at that rank until his desertion. He claims he was assigned to nurse sick and wounded soldiers but his record doesn't show that (a sergeant assigned to nurse duty?).

He also volunteered in 1861 in a different company, but appears on only one roll and doesn't show up on any subsequent rolls. Apparently he was dropped for some reason but not charged with desertion.
