Enlisted on 9/1/1861 as a Captain.
On 9/1/1861 he was commissioned into "A" Co. TX 5th Cavalry
He was Killed on 3/28/1862 at Glorieta Pass, NM

The following was submitted by: Brian Heintzelman

This soldier was killed at the Battle of Glorieta Pass in March 1862.
He was killed instantly by a musket ball in the forehead, fired by a
Colorado private named Pierce.
Shropshire was 29 years old, a lawyer from Columbus, Texas.
At the time of his death he was a Major, not a Captain.
In the summer of 1987, his remains were tentatively identified,
having been buried near Pigeon's Ranch. His remains were reburied in
Kentucky where he was born.

Ben Shropshire, 35, Captain, Capt. B. Shropshire’s Company, 5th Regiment Texas Volunters,* enlisted October 19, 1861 at Galveston, Tx. for 6 months, mustered out April 24,1862,

* This company was also known as Company F, 9th (Nichols’) Texas Regiment Texas Infantry

B. Shropshire, A. C. S., Captain of Cavalry, Waul’s Texas Legion, commissioned June 5,1862 near Brenham, recorded at the end of year 1862 as absent, on detached duty as Post Commissary at Grenada remaining through February, 1864, no further records
