It would seem to me according to Kanipe's account that Custer when shot in the heart fell backward over one soldier and his arms resting on another. According to Kanipe the bodies were stripped of clothing and to do this the Indians may have moved the soldiers who were lying on each other. Thus when Custer fell perhaps as much as an hour later rigor mortis had already set in and when the other two soldiers bodies were moved the only thing touching the ground may have been the small of Custer's back as stated by Kanipe. All of this is complete speculation on my part of course.
