It is best to read the accounts of the men who were there to understand men being killed or wounded during the War Between the States.
The following two sources come to mind, but I am sure some of the more learned posters can provide many more.
Albert Castel, ed., "Spotsylvania: How Men Die in Battle," Civil War Times Illustrated, Vol. XXII, No. 2, April 1983, pp. 16-19.
Kevin O'Beirne, "Taking Hits the Behavior of Soldiers Wounded in Battle," Civil War Historian, Vol. 2, Issue 1, January/February 2006, pp. 52-63. He provides some thirty quotes from soldiers.
Additionally, while it may be somewhat time-consuming, you may wish to study the letters, diaries, and reminiscences of the men who served in regiments in which you have an interest.
