Scarey situation and amazing. I grew up hearing, "When it's your time, it's your time". Stories like this amaze me as a civilian and as a RN. I think being a combat or MASH nurse would be horrific in the first months - meaning the technical medical part would seem impossible. I feel after treating quite a few injuries (and death) nurses, caretakers would learn to improvise. Today's world medicine would be different.

The Civil War was probably horrendous with emergency traumas. I would suspect, the bacteria alone would cause early death (if the injury itself did not cause immediate death).

World War II had bigger guns and killing machines. But, the injuries would be devastating.

I wonder how the number of deaths and injuries compared between the wars.

WWI - the nasty mustard must have been horrible too.
