By the time of Sharpsburg/Antietam, the Army of Northern Virginia was the mightiest army that ever fought in North America. Hood's Texas Brigade, which had 854 effective soldiers at Sharpsburg, would have been over 4,000 at full strength. That is due to a lot of illness during the summer months of 1862 and casualties during the Peninsula Campaign. This brigade, especially the 1st Texas Infantry, saved the ANV from a loss in that battle. The producers of the t.v. series got this part right according to some of my friends and colleagues (I do not get this channel). I have never seen an accurate portrayal of any CW battle on television or anywhere else. Perhaps one day....

Next spring or perhaps next summer a book that I co-authored with Joseph Owen and Phil McBride about the subject will be published. It is collection of personal reminisces about the battle by soldiers along with brief bio-sketches of these men. There are over 30 photos and several maps. The title is "Hood's Texas Brigade at the Battle of Antietam, a Terrible Clash of Arms: September 16-17 1862".
