Re: BLOOD AND FURY - new TV Civil War 6part

Irwin, slavery was a dying institution. Even historians with a Northern bias usually will admit it. The reason was wages, which is how Northern businessmen were able to obtain cheap labor for their factories (their primary economic strength). Folks were figuring out that it was cheaper to provide small wages and perhaps boarding than it was to pay for the upkeep of slaves. For example, they could hire some Irish immigrants and if they got sick or injured or simply left it was not a big deal to replace them. Slave owners had far too much invested in chattel slaves to let them suffer or wonder away. You can see by census records that groups of men (usually immigrants) were increasingly being documented as households in the South.....just not as much as in the North.
For economic reasons, slave owners were beginning to see the advantage in hiring men to work for them. One of the complications was social. Hardly anyone, North or South, was receptive to having 4 million free black folks for neighbors. To work peacefully, emancipation needed to take place in stages. Reconstruction and the disenfranchisement of both whites and blacks across the South simultaneously proved the point and the legacy is with us to this day.
