Bloomfield, Iowa

Confederate soldiers and special ops troops made forays into several unexpected places during the Civil War, including Ohio, Maine, Vermont, and sleepy Iowa. This has the distinction of being the furthest north reached by any Rebel partisan from the Confederate lines. And it has the nicest monument.

Twelve Confederates dressed in stolen Union uniforms snuck into Iowa on October 12, 1864. They spread havoc, reaching a point 15 miles into the state, then hightailed it back into Rebel-held Missouri.
