We have a debate in Simpson County, Mississippi over the origin of the name of the town of D'Lo -- originally spelled Dlo. It first appears on record with the approval of the post office in the early 1880s. Since then it has been accepted as fact the name came from a 18th French map of the area and a notation on this map denoting the area for water D' lo being a short word in French for a place of water or some such. This was declared as fact from some historian from the University of South Mississippi back in the 40s or 50s. Do a wiki on it and this history is used.

I think this is all hog wash for many reasons- nobody has ever produced this map for one, AND there are no other place names in the nearby area that are French, AND there is no history of any French settlements in this area..it was Choctaw territory right up and after the county was formed, AND how did backwoods Southern farmers in the 1880s get a French 18th Century map that nobody seems to able to find? At the time of the naming of the post office there (correct me if I am wrong) the regulations for naming a post office had changed to a short unusual name...i.e. Dlo. In the 1870s through early 1900s Dlo was sometimes used a woman's first name, but I cannot find who that could have been. I also thought that somebody had a good since of humor and named it Dlo after the postal use of the letters DLO for dead-letter-office...D'Lo is a very small town.
