Re: A Yankee outlaw and a Confederate CEO

According to the database of Illinois Veteran Index 1775-1995

Private Charles E. Boles of Company B in the 116th Illinois Infantry was 5' 8" inches tall with brown hair and gray eyes and born in England about 1829 and was married and noted his occupation as a farmer.

I've run across this before insofar as the color of the eyes as it depended upon how the sunlight hit the eyes. Sometimes it was blue and other times as gray. There is a word for this phenomenon but I've forgot the name.

Because of an inch of difference between the two physical descriptions and the same country of birth either we have two separate Charles E. Boles born in England or they are the same man.

I'm learning toward C. E. Bolton and Charles Earl Boles as being the same soldier who was in the 116th Illinois Infantry. The Civil War database which is a pay site noted he was wounded at Vicksburg. If his wound was in his mid section then this would further implicate him as being the same soldier in my opinion.

However I do still believe it was entirely possible for Black Bart to be robbing stage coaches in 1860 in California and David may have provided additional information to the Old West. I'll still pull his CMSR's at NARA upon my next visit. Hats off as usual David!
