Re: $400,000,000 for the Masters

In the 1880s the U.S. Army estimated the number of slaves purchased into the U.S. military at about 50,000.... and that is a conservative estimate. So much corruption surrounded these schemes it is difficult to number. It was the officers at Fort Pillow who were stealing slaves and then pocketing the money instead of paying off the owners; one of the reasons for Forrest to attack this non-military-valued installation so far behind enemy lines.
