David, we have to keep in mind that the information came from Find A Grave, some information may have an element of truth and other items perhaps not without documentation it's tough to say.

The letter to his wife in Missouri after his release seems authentic but I'd like to see that letter.

If in fact he was corresponding with his wife during the 1870's and 1880's I don't believe it is unreasonable to suggest he may have sent her some money from his robberies.

It appears to me that his father's name was spelled as Bowles and then for whatever reason it is changed to Boles and when it heats up with Wells Fargo he is known as Bolton and then he checked into the motel under a completely different name later on but finally confesses to being Boles and his family Bible seems to verify that through detective Hume although he is known in prison at Bolton. That is however my own personal opinion.

His wife may have died in 1896 but I can't confirm that but she was listed as a widower.

Black Bart was very transient from what I can see and this could be the reason why he is not found in the 1860 census, at least by me.

If C. Bowels was BB in the 1852 California census then he traveled to California by vessel and it's probably safe to assume he traveled back East in the same manner. While I don't know the cost of passage to California by vessel in 1852 I would imagine it was fairly expensive insofar as a mode of travel.

While it's true that people generally have the same method of operation, the 1860 robbery may have been BB's first and he may have had other men involved? I agree pretty much about what the expert said and he makes sense. 1860 was not 1850 insofar as finding a lot of gold. A lot of people had claims in 1860 in California and defended them.

Let's see what Illinois had to offer insofar as Charles Bowles or Boles being tied to Macon County, Illinois in 1860.

Personally I just don't see BB as being a farmer. He seems to thrive upon adventure. If he was a farmer in 1860 in Illinois then he may have been one of the most bored farmers in the State and farmers used horses for the most part and BB does not seem to like horses at all.
