This is interesting. What the BB expert said is true about there being two Charles E. Boles in the 1870 United States census.

The one living in Howard County, Iowa in 1870 described his occupation as a miner, born about 1830 in England. And his wife was Mary E. Boles, born about 1838 in New York. Other family household members were: Eva and also suggested as Ida Boles, born about 1827 in Iowa. (Iowa did not become a State until 1846) and Eva Boles, born about 1851 in New York and Lillian Boles, born about 1861 in Illinois and Arian Boles, born about 1865 in Minnesota.

The enumeration date was June 25, 1870.

The one living in Montana was born about 1833 in England and also described as a miner and the census was enumerated on June 1, 1870.

I don't believe BB could have made his way back to Iowa in 25 days from that part of Montana.

We could be dealing with two separate Charles E. Boles. But what if BB was engaged in robbing stages before history suggests? Could his wife had told the census taker that Charles E. Boles was living in Howard County, Iowa when he was not?

Historians have pointed to the family living in Iowa as BB's family.
