I would suspect, that were it not for the important contributions of blacks during the war, the Confederate field armies may not have lasted more then a year or two. Soldiers had to eat, wagons had to be driven and horses and mules cared for. President Lincoln would have known this. It is probable that the much publicized Emancipation Proclamation was much less about humanitarian reasons then of military and political necessity.
