I'm one that doesn't believe there was a great deal of anything done by Mr. Lincoln for "humanitarian reasons". He was though, a very shrewd politician. It was intended to unite the North (those fighting to preserve the Union, and the Abolitionists). The Proclamation actually freed no one in the rebelling States. Even though the Union Army occupied Nashville and a good portion of Tennessee, Andrew Johnson begged that Tennessee be exempt, for fear of losing Unionists support, especially in east Tennessee, and Mr. Lincoln obliged.

I believe I'm correct in saying Black cooks, musicians, and teamsters in the Confederate Armies were paid the same as white soldiers performing the same duties.
