Perhaps detective Hume knew BB the best

Black Bart was only convicted of his last robbery

The newspaper the Evening Star from San Jose, California dated July 3, 1889 on page three offered this account.

"BLACK BART"

"NOTED STAGE COACH ROBBER SAID TO BE IN CHINA"

"HE HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE THE WEEK FOLLOWING HIS RELEASE FROM SAN QUENTIN PRISON"

"The last seen of the noted stage robber in this city was when he sat on the lounge in Harry Morse's office about a week after his release from the San Quentin Penitentiary, says the Examiner. At this time he has announced no plans for the future.

Soon afterward several stage robberies were committed in northern counties, and detective Hume of Wells Fargo and Company laid them at Black Bart's door. He said he knew beyond doubt that Bart was the highwayman but the information on which he founded his belief was not divulged."
