Question About Shirts In Battle Or On Campaign

For Confederates starting in July 1863 on for new recruits or veterans would it ever have been acceptable (if they had not been issued one yet) for a soldier to go on campaign or into battle without a military issue jacket and just wear their shirt with canteen, haversack, cartridge box and belt ect?

Would this have happened at all or was it frowned upon?

Thanks in advance,

M. Williams,
