Anderson...whether he was telling the truth or not...sent an urgent letter to Washington to inform them the garrison would be out of certain foods within a very short time. A fact he had never had made aware to his superiors who thought he could hold out for much longer. There are many instances of such questionable information [in todays terms, fake news] coming from the U.S. garrison at Charleston. For example, the mythical mobs of Charleston who only appeared for a certain U.S. officer when he visited the city, and for others...who only reported be treated with respect. The lack of newspaper reports of said "mobs" but there are several official reports mentioning the hostile people of Charleston who were reported to be threatening to the U.S. troops there. Another is the mythical forces that placed the garrison of Fort Moultrie in mortal danger have never been identified.
