Re: A reference site for future study

Oops! "some 4,000 Confederate soldiers died" at Camp Douglass. Nobody knows because of egregiously negligent record keeping and disinterest in the dead. Hundreds of bodies were just thrown in a swamp or directly into Lake Michigan and dozens (God knows how many) were exhumed by ghouls for medical study. "Estimates of the number of dead vary from 4,039, the figure listed on the memorial, up to 7,500. Lost records, lost bodies, the 1871 Chicago fire, contractor corruption, and incompetence contributed to the discrepancies". The reason for "4,039" is because that is the total human beings identified in the shoddy record keeping.
