I agree in theory you're correct. However the boot with the initials JWB found at Doctor Mudd's residence would seem to indicate Booth did not go North. I've done a little research on Dr. Mudd and he was a southern sympathizer and had known JWB prior to the assassination and not just as a famous actor, this coming from Dr. Mudd's own words.
