Fox attempted to the use the tactics used in the Crimean War for his amphibious assault on the Charleston forts. These tactics were used by the U.S. Navy in China during the same time period. The USS Powhatan is noted for it's amphibious war record. In this image the USS Portsmouth, Levant and San Jacinto attack Chinese forts on the Pearl River near Canton, China. The initial amphibious attack, using ships launches pulled by a steam tug landed nearly 300 sailors and marines who overwhelmed one fort and used those guns, with the ships to defeat the other forts. The attack was led by Andrew Hull Foote who was notable for helping Porter steal the Powhatan.
