Here is a twist.

Lt. James A. Smith, Co. F, 39th Miss. Infantry, 1812-1894 was married to a Free Woman of Color, Sarah Perrett, sister to James and Peter Perrett, Free Men of Color and Confederate Soldiers. The Simpson County, Mississippi 1860 census shows this.

This information was given to me from a family member. Sarah's father Enoch, a Free Man of Color, was awarded a petition, signed by the white elders of the community stating that Enoch was a man of good character and deserved to be treated as a white person. A copy of the petition is coming.
