From the Company Descriptive Book of Company B of the 116th Illinois within his Compiled Military Service Records located at NARA in DC concerning Charles E. Boles (Black Bart)

Age 33 - Height 5' 8 inches - Complexion fair - Eyes gray - Hair Brown - Born in Norfolk County, England (Eastern England) Occupation farmer - Enlisted on August 13, 1862 at Decatur, Illinois for three years. (Notice it did not say he was from Decatur only enlisted there.)

Company Muster In roll - Private Charles E. Boles Captain McClurg's Company 116th Illinois Infantry age 33 Roll dated September 6, 1862. Joined and enrolled on August 13, 1862 at Decatur, Illinois for three years. (Note below it stated This organization subsequently became Company B of the 116th Illinois Infantry.

Company muster roll from blank to October 31, 1862 stated Private Charles E. Boles was present for duty.

Company muster roll from enrollment to December 31, 1862 stated Private Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for January and February 1863 stated Private Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for March and April 1863 stated Private Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for May and June 1863 stated Private Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for July and August 1863 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty. It further noted Appointed 1st Sergeant vice ? D. Jennings promoted to Commissary sergeant to date from July 1, 1863 by order of Major A. (can't transcribe name but starts with the letter F.

Company muster roll for September and October 1863 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for November and December 1863 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for November and December 1863 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty and noted Stopped for 1 cartridge belt and plate and one screwdriver and one wiper.

Company muster roll for March and April 1864 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for May and June 1864 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was absent and wounded since June 7, 1864 and at Acworth, Georgia.

His name appears of returns as follows: Wounded at Dallas, Georgia on May 26, 1864 and sent to hospital at Acworth, Georgia.

His name also appeared on a casualty sheet (Spelled as) Sergeant Chas. E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois wounded in Georgia. nature of casualty wounded severe. Date of wound May 26, 1864 (Information obtained from 116th Illinois Infantry Regiment 1st Brigade 2nd Division 15th Army Corps.

Company muster roll for July and August 1864 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for September and October 1864 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for November and December 1864 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for January and February 1865 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

Company muster roll for March and April 1865 stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was present for duty.

A Company muster out roll stated 1st Sergeant Charles E. Boles Company B 116th Illinois Infantry was mustered out near Washington, D.C. on June 7, 1865.
