The Battle of Black Rock aka Buffalo, NY on 30 Dec. 1813 was a retaliation for the sacking of a British fort in Canada the year prior when civilians were left without shelter in the dead of winter. The war was tit for tat and more brutal than most folks will ever know. My 4th g-grandfather (a native of TN serving in the US Army) was mortally wounded and died in the presence of his son, my 3rd g-grandfather. The American forces were routed and Buffalo was sacked by British troops and their Indian allies.
