The Great Hanging at Gainesville is a mixture of fact and legend. There were a series of hangings of convicted traitors in October of 1862 that took place in four contiguous North Texas counties where there were many Unionists, some of whom were treasonous. The story below does not even begin to explain their treachery. My count is that approximately 34 of the convicts were "executed" by hanging or being shot and I doubt more than a dozen were hanged in a single day. Nothing like the mass hanging of the Santee Sioux in Minnesota...who were sorely provoked into violence. https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/jig01
