A couple of my east Tennessee Confederate relatives that were paroled at Vicksburg never rejoined the army. They still attempted to obtain a pension, citing they were behind Federal lines as the reason. They were refused, so I wouldn't expect a deserter or someone who voluntarily surrendered before his command was paroled, to have been accepted.
