Re: East Tennessee Brothers On Both Sides

Stuart Nelson's record is interesting. He enlisted in Jonesboro, TN in the 60th Mounted Infantry on August 20, 1862 for 3 years (or duration of the war). He was captured in Big Black, MS on May 17, 1863 and sent to Ft. Columbus, NY or Ft. Delaware (record is vague, contradictory). On Sept. 26th, he was transferred to Point Lookout, MD. Some Union Brig. General in charge of prisoner exchanges wrote an application for his release (exchange) and ordered that Stuart be informed "he will be sent South against his consent". Then there is an entry that states he was released on July 14, 1864 after taking the Oath.
All I can say is that I am not one to judge him. He went through hell.
