On pgs 189-190 of Randolph McKims A Soldier's Recollections, he wrotes that during the intial shelling of the Confederate lines, a quartermaster told him that he looked for the teamsters but couldn't find them."He could not account for it," McKim, wrote," until he happened to look towards the river and there saw hundreds of black heads just showing above the water. The Negro teamsters with one accord had plunged into the river to escape the shells and were submerged to the neck."
