From “Defender of the Valley” we learn:

To augment this force, Imboden armed about seven hundred Wagoners in companies of a hundred each, commanded by wounded line officers.

It would seem to me that these Wagoners were composed of the enlisted drivers of the noted 1400 or so wagons.

Further, in Battles and Leaders, we learn [Imboden] “ . . . ordered as many of the Wagoners to he formed as could be armed with the guns of the wounded that we had brought back from Gettysburg.”

I would not believe colored Teamsters would at this time have the experience of trained troops and capable of efficiently responding to infantry commands of maneuver.
