Re: How Lincoln Could Have Prevented Civil War

Issue #1-- Slavery-- Slavery may have had a bearing on secession, but it was a cause of the war.

Issue # 2-- secession Buchanan-- Buchanan had no choice is\n the act of secession. As the author stated, it is not illegal, not stated in the constitution. Buchanan actually wanted the Southern states to take their case before congress for a vote, Lincoln didn't offer these states that chance, instead he sought out plans for an invasion.

Issue # 3-- Peaceful secession.-- Never got the chance to work. Lincoln refuse to meet peace delegates from the South.

Issue #4 -- Federal Forts, tariffs, weapons-- True on the forts and tariffs. The ORs explain how the weapons were moved South under Floyd. The myth that Floyd or anyone under him commit treason is just a myth at best.

Issue #5 -- Lincoln lies-- From the time Lincoln and his cabinet got into office they told nothing but lies. The truth is Lincoln never went out of his way to avoid an armed conflict.

Issue 6-- Avoiding armed conflict at Sumter-- as David pointed out many times, Fox's paln was an invasion plan. It was approved By Lincoln and supported by Lincoln. Also as David pointed out the Union fired the first naval shot of the war at a Southern passenger ship.

Issue # 7 -- found generals ruthless enough to win battles-- not only battles but actually attacking women and children. Killing and burning what they did not steal. Most of them today would be nothing than war criminals.

Issue #8-- arrested 854 civilians, rob and mistreat civilians. -- this went on the entire war and afterwards during reconstruction.

Issue # 9-- Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, -- Well it only applied to the slaves in the Confederacy. Makes #! a lie that slavery was a cause.

Issue #10-- Hundreds of Indians were held as prisoners -- What is he trying to do gloss over the fact that US troops killed hundreds of Indian women and children during this period? I may have my dates a little mixed, but I believe the Sand Creek Massacre took place under Lincoln.

Issue #11-- “Instructions for the Government of Armies of the United States in the Field.” -- As I and the author have pointed out, this is more of a joke than anything else. Look at what Sherman did to Columbia, S.C. Just look at his next paragraph.

Issue #12 --- Philip Sheridan ravaged the Shenandoah Valley by pillaging, plundering, and burning. Lincoln was overjoyed by the “victories” of Sherman and Sheridan because they assured his re-election that November.

Issue #13 -- Summary-- The question I am raising is whether-- I sorta agree with most of what he says. I think he actually hits some good points here. I do however wonder why he does tell more of the truth when it comes to history.
