Throughout rural Wisconsin, many young men were certain that the war would whisk them away from a life of drudgery and boredom. George Kurth of the 18th Wisconsin Volunteers was happy to leave Columbus behind. Although his parents wanted him to stay on the farm, he felt lonely there and “wanted to see more of the world.”[5]
