Re: George Kurth of the 18th Wisconsin

George, I was able to find for the descendant that George Kurth had come to the United States in 1852 aboard the vessel "America" that had pulled into Baltimore, Maryland in 1852. Because he had left a German State he would have been required to have an exist visa for this time period which was nothing but proving he had not owed anyone any money.

He was captured at the Battle of Allatoona, Georgia on October 5, 1864 and family lore said he was taken to Andersonville and escaped. I rather believe he may have been taken to Camp Cahaba, Alabama as it would have been the prison probably more likely for this time period and probably did not escape because he was aboard the Sultanna however that is just conjecture on my part. I did find his name as being onboard the Sultanna. He filed for a pension in 1883 and died in 1897. His father had died in 1873. However I could not find his name as a POW on ancestry but did not spend a lot of time looking for various surname spellings.

I advised the descendant who shares the surname to get his pension records and he would probably learn a great deal more. If he was at Andersonville he may have had a ASA badge afterward with the GAR.

Private George Kurth and the 18th Wisconsin arrived at Shiloh on April 5, 1862. For them they would not get much rest in days ahead.
